It counts as one of the best products of the modern age and was added to the collection of the Museum of Modern Arts <em>(Moma)<\/em> in New York in 1958. It is used to filter coffee the same way as it\u2019s done with other pour over methods <em>(e.g., with the porcelain filter with the big M or the Hario V60).<\/em> The difference is that the Chemex has a special filter paper made from pulp which is thicker. It allows to remove coffee oils and sediments much better. That way, you get a very<em> \u201cclean\u201d<\/em>, clear coffee, with defined acidity and few bitter compounds. The disadvantage: You can only buy the filters directly at Chemex and you must throw them away after using them. On the other hand, you do not need any power, if you leave aside the boiling of the water.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-16 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1b36728e\" data-id=\"1b36728e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-1fcf452e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"1fcf452e\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-16 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-12f4fcc8\" data-id=\"12f4fcc8\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2f871d1f\" data-id=\"2f871d1f\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c839637 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4c839637\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Cup size, filter circle, accuracy.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-16 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-21d42b8d\" data-id=\"21d42b8d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b73aacf elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b73aacf\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-16 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-46c5c6d\" data-id=\"46c5c6d\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-66 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-31175ba\" data-id=\"31175ba\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-802565b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"802565b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>These are the main points you need to consider when using the Chemex.<br \/>Let\u2019s start with the size of the carafe: Like the French press coffee, Chemex coffee turns out best, when you brew a whole carafe <em>(that is about the only similarity).<\/em> So, I got myself a smaller version for only three cups \u2013 my regular morning-intake.<\/p><p><em><strong>Second point:<\/strong> <\/em>The filter. While classic filters have a flat bottom, Chemex filters look like a cornet. That way, the water is supposed to run steadier through the ground coffee, which perfects the extraction. I bought the pre-folded filters recommended for the 3-cup-Chemex. When you place the filter in the carafe, make sure <em>(important!)<\/em> that the spout points towards you as well as the 3-layered side of the filter.<\/p><p>Grinding level, amount of ground coffee in relation to water, and water temperature are by the way the same as for other pour over methods:<\/p><ul><li>0.21-0.25 oz \/ 3-4 fl oz water<\/li><li>205 \u00b0F water temperature<\/li><li>Average brewing time = 4 minutes for 17 fl oz water<\/li><li>Grinding degree: average<\/li><\/ul><p><em><strong><br \/>The accurate brewing process is also the same:<\/strong><\/em><\/p><ul><li>Moisten the filter completely with warm\/hot water<\/li><li>Put the <em>(preferably)<\/em> freshly ground coffee into the filter and shake it a little to get a flat surface<\/li><li>Pour a small amount of water in the middle of the ground coffee and then, wet the entire ground coffee with a circular motion<\/li><li>Wait for about 30 seconds <em>(blooming phase)<\/em><\/li><li>A second pour in a circular motion. Always wait until all the water has run through the ground coffee completely.<\/li><li>Repeat until all the water is gone.<\/li><\/ul><p><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p><em><strong>And then: Try it.<\/strong> <\/em>It is quite interesting that everything is completely identical to other pour over methods, and yet: In the end the result from the Chemex is a different one. As mentioned before: Very clear, with fine acidity, and an emphasis on floral flavors. Humor yourself and prepare the same coffee in a French press. You will taste an enormous difference. I used our Arabica Crema, which has a nice dark roast, which is perfect for the French press. And develops completely different in the Chemex. According to the manufacturer, the filters are compostable and biodegradable. So, they can go into the organic trash. The carafe can be washed in the dishwasher. Make sure though, to remove the wood collar.<\/p><p><em><strong>My conclusion:<\/strong><\/em> The Chemex looks amazing, which is an absolute plus for a design freak like me. The coffee is also a piece of art, but not the kind of revelation I expected. It takes leisure to brew it, which is another plus point for me. On the other hand, there are the costs for the carafe and the filter paper. <em>In this respect, it is a lovely gift for every coffee aficionado. Not only for Christmas.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-16 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-7d7f1d3\" data-id=\"7d7f1d3\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><b><i>The glass carafe in form of an hourglass, wood collar, nozzle-spout \u2013 one would not assume that an 80-year-old coffee pot is experiencing such a hype again.<\/I><\/b> But what is so special about the Chemex?
