    The holy grail of ambitious coffee people \u2013 the portafilter machine \u2013 is, to be honest, a diva. <\/em>It doesn\u2019t only want to be fine-tuned, polished, and admired. Hissing and humming for attention, \u201cLa Macchina\u201d<\/em> also insists on regular wellness treatments with descaling liquid.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    At least that\u2019s the case with our machine \u2013 and the best of all men attaches great importance to ensuring that \u201chis Vibienne\u201d<\/em> still looks brand new, even at the tender age of 15. Well, then\u2026 So, how does cleaning a portafilter machine work?<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    \u201cOh, no!\u201d<\/em> you might be thinking now. \u201cNobody really reads them!\u201d<\/em> But you should. Because every machine has:<\/strong><\/p>

    1. its own descaler (caution: no citric acid!) –<\/strong><\/em> it is best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation.<\/p>

    And 2. each portafilter also has its own design.<\/strong> Apart from whether it is a single circuit or dual circuit model.<\/p>

    But: The basic principle is the same for most machines (here for a dual circuit portafilter):<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

    1. Pour the descaling agent (according to instructions!) into the machine<\/li>
    2. Drain the water from the steam boiler and heat exchanger<\/li>
    3. Fill steam boiler with descaling solution<\/li>
    4. Fill heat exchanger with descaling solution<\/li>
    5. Remove the filter & disassemble the brew group<\/li>
    6. Rinse steam boiler & heat exchanger by running a brew cycle with descaling solution<\/li>
    7. Fill fresh water into the machine<\/li>
    8. Rinse the steam boiler & heat exchanger by running a brew cycle with fresh water<\/li>
    9. Reassemble & lock the brew group<\/li><\/ol>

      But please don’t just blindly follow these steps. Always follow the instructions for use \u2013<\/strong><\/em> amongst other things because the descaler also needs time to take effect (the times vary from model to model)<\/em> – then nothing can go wrong. Otherwise, it would be such shame for the machine and espresso. It goes without saying that the water tank and drip tray should also be kept meticulously clean, otherwise you could end up with mold in the machine – especially in the drip tray – and nobody wants that. That leaves the actual coffee portafilter. But you clean it after every espresso anyway. (Right?)<\/em><\/p>
